About Us
We are the South Wigston Musical Theatre Co. (Used to be Methodist) better known by our initials, SWM. We are one of the oldest groups in Leicestershire still performing today. As the group started as a methodist theatre company, our cast was made up of church members. However, the last few years we have welcomed a lot of outsiders, members of the public, which is brilliant!
The Group normally produces one large show every year, this includes a traditional pantomime in or around Christmas. Every now and again we produce a cabaret (or a variety show) during the spring/ summer season.
Get Involved
Join SWM
Come and join us, whether your interested in lead roles, singing, dancing, acting or just being in the chorus! We always keep the website up to date with the newest information, including our next shows, rehearsal dates, ticket info and auditions. However, we also have spaces available for those who just want too be part of the backastage crew and set preparation/design.
Set Building and creating/collecting props
We have a team (usually the backstage crew) who do our set build and without them, there really is no show. Their creative minds puts even more depth in to our shows, giving us amazing backdrops and scenery for the audience to be really enticed. We have many flats that normally get painted over every show, rather than throwing them and spending money on more, we normally just edit and adjust them. The detail and creativeness that is put in to the set, is incredible.
In terms of props, we usually have what we need, but sometimes need a drop paint and slightly altering.
Prompt
The prompt has a vital role. They are asked to attend every rehearsal to learn the script and the way the scenes are set. The prompt is extremely helpful to those that have trouble remembering the odd line or action, this is where the prompt jobs is at it's best. They tend to sit at the side of the stage, following the show just in case someone gets stuck.
Stage Manager & Backstage crew
The stage manager role is also vital, they are involved from the beginning, they get stuck in with set build and planning where and how to set the scenes. They also work closely with the director, overlooking all aspects of the production while on stage, to make sure that backdrops, flats and props all suit the scenes, if not, they'll need altering. They'll also work closely to the choreographer so the dancers/ cast/ chorus have space on the stage and that nothings in the way. When everything and everyone moves up to venues for the fit up and final rehearsals, the manager works with the backstage crew to make sure they know all the set changes and timings.
We have runners as well, who go down to make sure cast are ready for their scenes.
Front of house
The front of house overlooks the programme sellers and stewards. The stewards role is to make sure that the audience all have tickets and are seated in the right place. They are also the eyes of health and safety for the auditorium.
Lighting/ Sound
We currently have Lighting and Sound technicians located at the top/ back of the auditorium. They set up and test at the fit up
